Overview of talk

Less than 100 years ago, everyone could look up and see a spectacular starry night sky. Now, millions of children across the globe will never experience the Milky Way where they live. The increased and widespread use of artificial light at night is not only impairing our view of the universe, it is adversely affecting our environment, our safety, our energy consumption and our health.  Oil and gas refineries, greenhouses and satellites are raising new threats to our view of the night sky and concerns about increased light pollution.

Don Ficken, President of the Missouri Chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association (“IDA Missouri”), will talk about the impact of light pollution on our view of the night sky, wildlife and ecosystems, energy waste and human health, and IDA’s global effort to reduce light pollution.
