Title:  LED Lighting - The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Speaker:  DeAnn Gregory, Missouri Master Naturalist and DarkSky Missouri Board Member

Location:  Kansas City Oasis Community Center, 1717 W. 41st St, Kansas City, MO 64111

Event Description: DeAnn is a Missouri Master Naturalist and longtime conservationist, currently serving on the DarkSky Missouri board. In 2020, while serving on a Thomas Hart Benton Sierra Club Committee, she researched environmental and societal impacts of overlighting in anticipation of Kansas City’s (then future) planned transition to LED streetlights. A Sierra Club subcommittee robustly advocated for environmental considerations, influencing the final outcome. (Residents in Tucson and other cities that chose environmentally responsible lighting said, “Even the people look better.”) Light pollution is currently a robust area of scientific research worldwide, across many fields of study. A brief synopsis can be found in the 2023 Artificial Light at Night State of the Science report (zenodo.org/records/8071915). DeAnn will describe the causes of light pollution, ecological impacts, and current projects of DarkSky Missouri to raise awareness. DeAnn is retired from Missouri Department of Natural Resources and resides in Kansas City with her husband, two dogs and five chickens.
