MISSOURI SQM CONNECTED PROGRAM - ONE YEAR LOANER
Thank you for your interest in becoming a “Missouri Sky Quality Meter Program” measurement site.
The Missouri Chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association (“IDA Missouri”), in partnership with Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, is launching a program entitled “Missouri Sky Quality Meter Program” that will deploy Sky Quality Meters (“SQMs”) at selected locations throughout the state of Missouri to measure sky brightness. The SQMs will be directed toward a fixed point in the sky to log data for scientific analysis and to develop programs to reduce light pollution.
The program will launch in October 2019 with eight SQMs manufactured by Unihedron with the purchase of more units planned. Deployment of the SQM's will be determined by an application process available to public institutions located in Missouri such as parks and recreational areas, educational institutions and municipalities. Applications will be accepted starting in August 2019 with installation sitese selected based on a number of criteria including the:
Scientific usefulness of the data
Installation site’s ability to perform routine tasks such as changing batteries and retrieving data on a timely basis
Potential for the installation site to implement programs to reduce light pollution
Likelihood that the SQM device will be lost due to theft.
Installation of the devices will be on trial basis not to exceed one year. If the trial is successful as agreed to by both parties, the installation may be extended to a more permanent basis. The devices will be provided by the Missouri Sky Quality Meter Program at no cost to the participating organization. The devices remain the property of Missouri Sky Quality Meter Program and the installation site will not be held responsible should a device be damaged or stolen.
