WEBINAR: GATEWAY TO THE STARS - MAY 2021
Gateway Arch National Park is once again pleased to present its Gateway to the Stars program, presented from May-October. Events are co-hosted by the St. Louis Astronomical Society and Dark Sky Missouri. Each monthly event will begin with an Astronomy or space-themed educational program and will be followed by a tour of the current night sky and then video views of celestial objects using amateur telescopes.
8:00 pm - 9:00 pm - Globe at Night: Citizen Science of Light Pollution
Our first program for 2021 will take place on May 8 at 8 pm features the “Globe at Night: Citizen-Science on Light Pollution.” NOIRLab Scientist Dr. Connie Walker will discuss why and how to participate in Globe at Night. The international citizen-science campaign raises public awareness of the impact of light pollution on our lives. Citizen-scientists are invited to measure and submit their local night sky brightness. Whether your sky is brightly lit or pitch dark, it's easy to get involved -- all you need is your eyes (adjusted to the dark), no Moon and a computer or a smart phone. NOIRLab is the National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory, operated by the National Science Foundation.
9:00 pm - 9:45 pm - Virtual Tour of the Night Sky
The program continues with a guided tour of the May night skies, using the Stellarium program, followed by live or recorded views of celestial objects provided by St. Louis Astronomical Society members.
